Like women, the inequalities faced by minority groups have also become clearer during this time. Here in America, Asian-Americans have been the victim of discrimination and harassment and African-American and Native American groups have been particularly hard-hit by the virus. Statistics show that the percentage of Blacks who have died from the coronavirus is much higher than the percentage of Blacks that make up the population across the US and in Europe (Ro 2020). Meanwhile, Native Americans who live on reservations are at "much higher risk of fatal complications from the coronavirus" because many live in small family homes without running water and "suffer disproportionately from hypertension, asthma, cancer, heart and cardiovascular disease"- making it much easier to be infected by COVID-19 (Hedgpeth, Fears, and Scruggs 2020). This relates to Critical Race Theory because it highlights the disparages between Whites and minority groups in America through something non-biased. The coronavirus doesn't infect people based on color, yet minorities are disproportionately affected because of institutionalized racism. The coronavirus has shown that racism is still a "common, everyday experience of most people of color in this country" because of how much they have been affected (Delgado and Stefancic 2014 [2001], 413). It has also shown that blatant racism still exists from the discrimination experienced by Asians in America and all over the world. Even the President of the United States, Donald Trump, is contributing by calling it the "Chinese virus", emphasizing its origin and deliberately expanding the racist fear of Asian people because of it (Loffman 2020). This also relates to Critical Race Theory because it shows that racism is "not objective, inherent, or fixed" and instead it can be changed when convenient (Delgado and Stefanic 2014 [2001], 414). Before the coronavirus hit, Asians experienced discrimination, however it was much less frequently on such a blatant and aggressive level. Now that the coronavirus has become a problem, people use racial biases to create scapegoats. This discrimination has demonstrated both the "social construction" and "differential racialization" theories, showing that our racial biases are not based on anything biological and can be changed to our needs during different points in history. Because we need someone to blame during this crisis, hate has turned to Asians through rhetoric that they are the ones spreading the disease and they are the ones to hate and be fearful of.
